Pima Inspired Bowl

I originally turned this bowl in 2015 with the naked beads and with a much smaller center.

That unfinished piece has been sitting as a UFO until last week.

Last month the woodturning club I belong to (MSWG) had a demonstration on what I call mosaic illusion embellishing of platters.

This month MSWG club President announced  a "President's Bowl Challenge for next meeting on 9/18/2021.

I decided to complete what I call a two·fer.

I enlarged the center of the unfinished bowl and added Basket Illusion embellishing.

(similar to but not the same as mosaic illusion)

6-3/4 inches in diameter / hard maple

The design inspiration came from this Pima basket tray made in 1900-1910.

Introducing The Newsroom Series

This is OFF THE RECORD.

The wood hollow form was turned in 2004 (Holly).

As the wood aged, it lost its character
so now it sports a whole new vibe.

7" tall with a diameter of 5.5" at the widest point.

Detail of OFF THE RECORD

This is YESTERDAY'S NEWS.

It measures 8.5" tall with an 8.5" diameter at the top
and was turned earlier this year from Bradford Pear.

And this is LATE BREAKING NEWS.

Thin wall Bradford Pear.

5" tall with a 5" diameter at the top.

The Newsroom Series is a collaboration between my wife Julie and I.

I did the woodturning forms and she added the exterior wrapping.

The wrap is newspaper yarn
made by a cooperative of women in India
using narrow strips of newsprint that is tightly twisted.

Since this is my first baking-related blog post,
I really should mention that bread baking
has become a weekly event since retirement.

We haven't purchased store-bought bread, cookies,
brownies, or dinner rolls in well over three years now . . .
homemade is SO much tastier.

Published Article and the Cover Photo

American Association of Woodturners has released the
February 2021  Vol 10 No 1 issue of

The cover photo is of me turning a beverage smoker.

Inside is an eight page how-to article written and photographed by me.

However, this could never have happened without
the help of my wife Julie doing the proof reading
and suggesting written improvements.

Don McIvor, Editor of Woodturning FUNdamentals,
was a delight to work with.

Overall getting this published was a great experience!

If you are a member of AAW then you can download the publication
